Rabies Vaccinations for Stray Cats Held in Blok M Area

South Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture (KPKP) Sub-agency held an activity entitled "Jakarta Cares for Street Cats" in the Blok M area, Kebayoran Baru District. The activity was held to commemorate World Rabies Day (WRD) 2026.

Maintain Jakarta's rabies-free status

Head Section of Animal Husbandry and Health, Irawati Harry Artharini said this activity is focused on stray cats or street cats as an effort to ensure that animal welfare is maintained evenly, not only for pets that have owners.

"Wild animals also have the right to welfare. So we're trying to initiate this activity in the Blok M area as our primary target," she said, Thursday (9/24).

Irawati explained that in this activity, the South Jakarta KPKP Sub-agency targeted health checks, minor treatment, and rabies vaccination for 200 cats.

"Services are spread across a number of key points in the Blok M area, namely the Pasaraya Blok M Hub and Literasi Park areas, Blok M Square, Melawai Plaza and Sepeda Park, as well as the Church, Sentralraya, and BNI areas," she explained.

According to her, the implementation of the activity was supported by 60 volunteers consisting of elements of the KPKP Agency and Sub-agency, cat lover communities such as Cat Melawai, Dunia Anabul, and Satu Pet Anabul, as well as the urban village officials.

"The public's enthusiasm to join as volunteers was recorded as very high, even though the committee's capacity had to be limited," she added.

This activity was made possible thanks to the collaboration of various parties. Several sponsors provided support, including Me-O, which provided animal feed, Kalbe Animal Health, which provided medication, and Pet Tag, which provided cat identification devices in the form of barcode collars.

"Every stray cat that has been examined and vaccinated will be given a special tag in the form of a barcode on its collar so that it can be easily identified," she continued.

According to her, Jakarta Province has had rabies-free status since 2004. However, the challenge in maintaining this status remains high because Jakarta is surrounded by areas that are not yet rabies-free, such as Tangerang and West Java.

"The high mobility of animal traffic between regions makes prevention efforts, including mass rabies vaccination, necessary to maintain Jakarta's rabies-free status," she stated.

In addition to vaccination, Irawati continued, efforts to control the cat population are also being carried out through the TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) method which targets the neighborhood association (RW) level, especially in areas prone to receiving public complaints.

"We urge pet owners to routinely vaccinate against rabies every year and actively carry out sterilization to control the stray cat population sustainably," she added.
